Major NYC Labor Union Endorses Community Organizer over Incumbent Kendall Stewart
Brooklyn (June 12, 2009) - Democratic primary challenger Jumaane Williams has picked up a major endorsement in the race for the 45th City Council District: SEIU 32BJ, the largest private-sector labor union in New York, is backing Williams over incumbent Councilman Kendall Stewart.
"We need a City councilmember who is on the side of working New Yorkers, and Jumaane Williams' 15 years as a community organizing prove he is dedicated to the people of his district," said Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ SEIU. "We can count on Jumaane to bring vision, fresh ideas, and commitment to his work on the City Council."
SEIU 32BJ represents more than 70,000 workers in the New York City area. Its diverse membership includes a broad range of maintenance and security workers.
"This endorsement is a huge honor and a major boost for our campaign," Williams said. "32BJ's members know how important it is to stand up for good wages, respect in the workplace, affordable homes and communities we can be proud of. On the City Council I will stand with them and fight for progress on these issues every day."
Jumaane Williams is a first-generation Caribbean American who has lived in Brooklyn his entire life. After coming up through the NYC public school system, he became an organizer for affordable housing and immigrant communities. Williams has served as the Housing Director for the Flatbush Development Corporation, where he rebuit a defunct housing program, and as the Executive Director of the NYS Tenants & Neighbors, a state-wide organization that fights for tenants' rights and affordable housing through organizing and advocacy.
The 45th City Council District covers a portion of central Brooklyn, including parts of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands, Canarsie and Midwood.
